Kazakhstan plans to gain FMD free country status in 2015

“Kazakhstan is expected to get the status of a country free of foot- and-mouth disease (FMD) in 2015,” Vice Minister of Agriculture Gulmira Issayeva said today in Astana.
“The country’s epizootic FMD situation remains favorable. September this year Kazakhstan applied to the World Organization for Animal Health and hopes to get the FMD free status with and without vaccination,” she told journalists on the sidelines of the Majilis sitting.

“The results of consideration of the country’s application will be known next spring,’she resumed.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) is the intergovernmental organisation responsible for improving animal health worldwide. The need to fight animal diseases at global level led to the creation of the Office International des Epizooties through the international Agreement signed on January 25, 1924. In May 2003 the Office became the World Organisation for Animal Health but kept its historical acronym OIE. It is recognised as a reference organisation by the World Trade Organization (WTO) and in 2014 had a total of 180 member states.
