President Nursultan Nazarbayev introduced Imangali Tasmagambetov as the new Defense Minister, Akorda reports.
In the 90s he was an assistant to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Then since April 2008 moved to the Mayor of Astana role.
Tasmagambetov also served as Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration – Head of organizational control department of the Presidential Administration. In 1998 he was the first assistant to the President of Kazakhstan, in 1999 – Atyrau region governor.
In December 2000, he was reappointed the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and in 2002 – Prime Minister of the country. In 2003 he was the Secretary of State, and a year later – the head of the Presidential Administration.
In Dec 2004 – Apr 2008 he was the Mayor of Almaty. In April 2008 he was appointed the Mayor of Astana.
