Kazakh citizens who traveled to see “El Clasico” among the dead in plane crash

The three members of a Kazakh family who perished in the Germanwings airliner crash in the French Alps were on their way to Germany after a weekend stop in Spain to attend the FC Barcelona-Real Madrid soccer match.

Yerbol Imankulov, 50, his wife, Aizhan Issengalieva, 49, and their 26-year-old son, Adil Imankulov, were aboard Tuesday’s doomed flight from Barcelona to Düsseldorf, Germany.

The couple’s 12-year-old daughter remained at home in Ust-Kamenogors, Kazakhstan, the sources said.

They told that the three Kazakh victims were headed to Germany on business and had decided to travel via Barcelona to attend Sunday’s “El Clasico” clash between Spain’s two top clubs.

Yerbol Imankulov managed a project to produce silicon, while Issengalieva ran a mining company.

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev said his government would “provide the necessary assistance for the identification of victims, their belongings and transportation for their remains” back home.

Nazarbayev sent a telegram of condolence to the families of those killed in the crash, saying that Kazakhstan “received with sadness the death of their fellow citizens.”

All 150 people on board died in the crash. Most of them were Spanish and German, but people from 15 different countries were on the flight.

According to German sources, Kazakhstan-born opera singer Oleg Bryjak was also on the flight.

Another passenger, Elena Bles, is thought to have been a Kazakh citizen.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan has been contacted to verify Bles’ nationality.
